You’d be hard pressed finding someone in the electronica fraternity that hasn’t been immersed and/or inspired by Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle’s works over the past 20 plus years. The duo, Slam, having established a lasting impact on Glasgow’s underground scene all those years ago, have never ceased to amalgamate experimentation and develop fresh waves. Their label Soma Records is quite easily regarded as one of the most respected catalogues of electronic music, alongside their own personal achievements.

Given the world is in the process of celebrating 20 years of Soma Records, we thought there’d be nothing more apt than to host this weeks special guest. Enjoy.

The Kana Show has been remodelled, reshaped, re-jiggled, and returns to you in an all new format – you guessed it – a Podcast!

The new face of Kana will be this “Kana Cast“, this way we will be able to maintain a regular weekly show without any interruptions from bandwidth drop outs and deliver exactly what you want – top quality shows from amazingly talented and passionate artists!

If you like the show, tell your friends, tell your colleagues, get everyone involved! Subscribe to Kana in your favourite document reader or just subscribe to the Podcast in iTunes, its that easy to stay connected with the Kana sounds and happenings!

We are commencing a new mix series entitled “City Lights”, Leo Hede started things off in a very special a couple of weeks ago which you can find here, and will find on Kana and iTunes in the coming weeks.

But, for our first Kana Cast we would like to re-introduce you to the deep, hypnotic stylings of Justin Margovan. We asked Justin to prepare something very special for our listeners to capture the depth and drive of his musical passion, this is what he has to share with you, I think you’ll agree it is something very worthy indeed.

Heres what Justin had to say about his mix:

“I wanted to do something different than a complete full on dance floor mix. Areas of it still have that vibe but it was aimed so that people can listen to it on their mp3 players, at home when they are warming up for a night out, or even when they get back after a club. There’s dark parts and light parts with some subtle, and not so subtle, energy changes. I hope you all enjoy the journey.”

A little about Justin:

As an artist playing and making music, it’s easy to boast your achievements and credentials. Justin would rather let you listen and decide for yourself. A dedicated student to his craft, this guy is constantly evolving his skills and never fails to put on a show.
He’s been Djin since early 90s and just getting round to releasing some tracks.

Here’s a studio mix for you all to enjoy and it explores the darker side of his passion.
Thanks for listening,

Introducing Kazu Kimura

If you haven’t heard of him yet and like your techno industrial, hypnotic, funky, dark and driving, then you are definitely in for a treat. Following his recent chart for Kana, Kazu has delved even deeper to share with us an exclusive mix which will surely stick to you like honey! So just lean back and let the music envelop for what is truly a whirlwind 57 minutes or pure dancefloor KArNAge.

Read on to find out more about the man himself…

Biography:

Kazu started his DJ career back in 1987 playing at clubs in Tokyo and Nagano Japan. His passion for the music convinced him to become a professional DJ at the early age of 19 which was no easy task at this time Japanese society. Teaming up with DJ Baby Tokyo at the early age of 20 they went on to launch some of the earliest dance parties in Tokyo setting up Voice Production in 89′ The concept was a multimedia mix control (DJ event/visuals/fashion) company and it was a big movement for the Club culture of Tokyo at the time. Kazu first toured the USA back in 1990 playing club Medusa in Chicago and the legendary Trax in Washington DC.

After returned from the States he started production of his own where he was featured on early Japanese Dj compilations such as Tokyo Explosion ‘, Vol 1 andl2 of Crown Records Japan in early 90′ He Moved to Australia in 94′ and he was received with open arms wowing local crowds and was immediately enlisted for shows across the country – from Perth to Sydney, Hobart to Melbourne, where he was widely acclaimed as the most popular techno DJ. All this while still travelling between Australia and Japan where he would play at the famous super club “Liquid Room” Tokyo.

One of Holland’s best underground Techno / House Labels ” Touch ” approached him to release his own material and has to date released ‘Sound Media’ 4 Tracks EP through Touche’s sub label Jam 95′. Mushroom Distribution service Australia approached him to mix the first ever DJ Excursions series CD vol 3, a first for Australia.

Over the past 6 years he has played in Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Spain for European Countries. he also played in USA, and Japan of course, Singapore, Hongkong in asia. To express himself more freely Kimura has once again returned to the studio already releasing for the acclaimed CL-Recordings(Frankfurt) imprint and with Mutual Solid Cuts(Barcelona) and WetMusik(Melbourne) in progress, he did some remix work for Blackcodes Experience Japanese Remixes, DP-6/City Lights(Elephanthaus) Kazu owns his style, mixing style is simple but effective and hypnotic from using 3 decks mixing with hardgroove sound to industrial funk, and sometimes playing his favorite detroit techno classics. He has new plan for this year to start his own new label Conspira Records for his own new materials.

As promised last week, here are the details of Adam’s guest appearance on Australian National radio, Saturday 21st March.

Triple J’s Mix Up dance show has long been heralded as the leader in upfront, underground, leftfield and downright wicked grooves from 10pm on a Saturday night right through to the early hours of Sunday morning.
This Sat (14th) you can hear Russian minimalists SCSI-9 (Kompakt), post Colours appearance (13th @Empire, Brisbane). Expect things to be minimal in every sense of the word from the days prior to its mainstream exposure. Tweaky, stripped back and blissful.

Following Adam’s closing set at the SCSI-9 appearance in Brisbane, Adam has been invited to appear on the Mix Up show just one week later. Sat 21st will see Adam’s third appearance on Triple J’s flagship weekend dance experience. Having been over 4 years since his last interview and guest spot in 2004, he has a lot of ground to cover so expect a showcase of eclectic techno, driving percussion and hypnotic beats.

With his own productions featuring in the Kana Show on several occasions, it is no suprise that Richard Belsom, head of London-based Phobic Records, would be our first Feature Artist.
BIO:

Originating from Maidstone in Kent, a town famed for generating an influx of talent currently flooding todays dance scene, Richard Belsom has established himself as one of the UK’s finest up and coming DJ’s/producers.

No stranger to the scene, his unquenchable passion for dance music stems from over a decade of treading the boards of various clubs and events across the globe. It was this passion that inspired Richard to combine his several years of classical music training with his love of dance music to fulfil a role that would place him on the other side of the turntables by becoming a DJ, producer, label partner in Cubism with Tony Thomas, and most recently starting his own Phobic Records label.

Richard’s love for mixing started back in ’95 at the tender age of just 16, spending every space penny on vinyl. After a few months practice Richard decided to apply his skills to a live audience and got a residency at a local U18’s party, this was to earn him alot of experience and learning opportunity over the 3 years he held the residency. Eventually deciding that weekends were far too cherished for the likes of u18’s parties Richard left to pursue his other main passion Рclubbing. This is where he discovered his love for house music, totally inspired by dj’s like Sasha, Digweed, Danny Howells.

Since finishing in the semi finals of the Rhythm Clash DJ competition a few years back (held in association with Pioneer and Club Class), Richard’s portfolio has seen him go onto play some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the UK and Ibiza including Ministry of Sound in London, Stealth in Nottingham, The Gallery at Turnmills, the Electric Gardens Festival (to a 3000 strong crowd), Es Paradis and Bar M to name but a few, as well as securing residencies with no less than four club nights across the South East, as well as promoting his own Cubism events.

This portfolio doesnt just end there, seeing Richards success story go on to include warming up for or playing alongside some of the worlds finest artists including Peace Division, Layo & Bushwacka, Tom Middleton, Paolo Mojo, Ashley Caselle, King Roc, Nic Fanciulli, Klaus “Heavyweigt” Hill, Tony Thomas, The Electric Press, James Mowbray, Deepgroove, Simon Baker, Simon Morell, Luke Dzierzek, The Rogue Element, Elite Force, Precision Cuts and many more.

Richard describes his sound as ranging from laid back grooves, deep hypnotic minimal through to chugging tech house, breaks and techno. He also incorporates 3 cdj’s, keyboard, and Pioneer FX unit to push the boundaries of his sets to a new level.

Main influences include artists like Sasha, Danny Howells, James Zabiela, Justin Robertson, Peace Division, Nic Fanciulli, Paul Woolford, James Laville, Dave Clarke, Magda, Josh Wink, and Lee Burridge to name but a few.

On the production front Richard is constantly in the studio experimenting with sound and creating tracks around the genres he loves. His work has been signed to many labels including Jack Digitals, Bass For Breakfast, Ambiosphere, Cubic Records, New Era, Click Recordings, Send Records, Cubism, Evasive, Fragile Recordings, S.P. Recordings and most recently Oliver Huntemann‚Äôs Confused imprint with a huge remix from minimal giants Piemont. Richard‚Äôs production work has recieved support from various topjocks across the globe including Nic Fanciulli, Hernan Cattaneo, Paul Woolford, Yousef, King Unique, Goldfish & Der Dulz, Nicolas Masseyeff, Oxia, Spektre, Larsson, Jamie Mchugh, Tom Stephan, Deepgroove (Who reviewed Rhythm in M8 magazine), Oliver Huntemann, Bedrock legend Pole Folder who recently featured “Surrender” on his radio mix (80hz Sessions), and Tony Thomas who has just featured Drums Go on his forthcoming Cubism mix album. Recently Richard also won a remix competition judged by Global Underground star Anil Chawla and Paul Lancaster, for his remix of Anil‚Äôs track Fever (available now on Fragile Recordings).

In May 2007 Richard went into partnership with Tony Thomas in the Cubism record label. After a year working on Cubism, and 10 very succesful releases, Richard decided the time was right to set off on his own path and Phobic Records was born. Phobic will be concentrating more on pure underground music from deep house, minimal and techno with the label philosophy aimed at bringing the freshest sounds from the worlds greatest undiscovered talent alongside some of the finest established names in the scene. Already gaining support from some of the biggest DJ’s in the world including Steve Lawler, Nic Fanciulli, Audiojack, Tom Pooks, Smokin Jo, Toni Rios, Anil Chawla, Simon Baker, Harvey Mckay etc etc the label is set for huge success in 2008 and beyond.

In today’s evloving music scene there is so much music, so many labels, and even more dj’s & producers than ever before that it is quite challenging to stay on top of the ‘who’s who’ of house & techno. The simple task of laying down two tracks (which some people call DJ’ing) is becoming easier and easier, so much so that a 10 year old with A.D.D. could pull off an hour’s set without much trouble. Are these troublesome times? I think not. For the faster our music scene grows, inevitably the more truly talented artists we are all exposed to. As more and more people take to digital methods of performance, the more great new concepts and controllers are developed to meet these growing demands.

So in this vein, Kana have decided to take some of the ‘guess work’ out of the equation and share with our readers a few artists whom we feel demonstrate this tenacity to rise above the crowd, push the envelope and ultimately push our music scene into the future.

Keep an eye out for our “Feature Artist” posts in which you might find artists you know, and some perhaps you don’t. Every post will have an exclusive mix prepared for our Kana audience by the featured artist and an in depth bio to demonstrate why they might have pricked out attention.

From all of us here at Kana, we hope you enjoy the articles and definitely rock out to these special mixes.

Yours in music & good vibes,

Kana
