Joris Voorn Interview – Balance 14 Tour – Brisbane 2009

Joris Voorn Interview – Balance 14 Tour – Brisbane 2009

After the success of Voorn’s Easter Saturday appearance in 2008, Logic & Kana were quick to get the Brisbane leg of the Balance 14 tour nailed down and after a heavy dose of everything from disco, house and tech from Mike Redfern, bpm, Elliot Clarke and Fuzion, Voorn’s return appearance was set for something fairly monster.  Kicking things off with some of the quality deeper music he’s been throwing around for sometime the afternoon dynamics shifted seamlessly in to the darkness of sunset.

Three hours later we were left floorless.  The comments being thrown around and the intensity of the party rattled from one wall to the other, long after we left the venue.  There’s no doubt in our minds it was one of the best parties we’ve all been a part of so a huge thanks to Joris and most of all those who turned up!

Post-Party, Joris was kind enough to have a few words with Kris Swales, chief editor for Time Off, and we’ve attached it to the footage from the event.  Australia’s Techno and House scene definitely has something to be proud of and it’s only getting better.

See you all at the next party – thanks and all the best :-)

Read on to find out more about the man himself…

Biography:

Kazu started his DJ career back in 1987 playing at clubs in Tokyo and Nagano Japan. His passion for the music convinced him to become a professional DJ at the early age of 19 which was no easy task at this time Japanese society.  Teaming up with DJ Baby Tokyo at the early age of 20 they went on to launch some of the earliest dance parties in Tokyo setting up Voice Production in 89′ The concept was a multimedia mix control (DJ event/visuals/fashion) company and it was a big movement for the Club culture of Tokyo at the time. Kazu first toured the USA back in 1990 playing club Medusa in Chicago and the legendary Trax in Washington DC.

After returned from the States he started production of his own where he was featured on early Japanese Dj compilations such as Tokyo Explosion ‘, Vol 1 andl2 of Crown Records Japan in early 90′ He Moved to Australia in 94′ and he was received with open arms wowing local crowds and was immediately enlisted for shows across the country – from Perth to Sydney, Hobart to Melbourne, where he was widely acclaimed as the most popular techno DJ.  All this while still travelling between Australia and Japan where he would play at the famous super club “Liquid Room” Tokyo.

One of Holland’s best underground Techno / House Labels ” Touch ” approached him to release his own material and has to date released ‘Sound Media’ 4 Tracks EP through Touche’s sub label Jam 95′. Mushroom Distribution service Australia approached him to mix the first ever DJ Excursions series CD vol 3, a first for Australia.

Over the past 6 years he has played in Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Spain for European Countries. he also played in USA, and Japan of course, Singapore, Hongkong in asia. To express himself more freely Kimura has once again returned to the studio already releasing for the acclaimed CL-Recordings(Frankfurt) imprint and with Mutual Solid Cuts(Barcelona) and WetMusik(Melbourne) in progress, he did some remix work for Blackcodes Experience Japanese Remixes, DP-6/City Lights(Elephanthaus) Kazu owns his style, mixing style is simple but effective and hypnotic from using 3 decks mixing with hardgroove sound to industrial funk, and sometimes playing his favorite detroit techno classics.  He has new plan for this year to start his own new label Conspira Records for his own new materials.

Exclusive Kana Chart – Joris Voorn – Unreleased (July, 2009)

In the lead up to the Balance video interview coming to Kana shortly, Joris was kind enough to share his top 10 favourite unreleased tunes of the moment, exclusively for the Kana audience.

01.  Joris Voorn – We’re All Clean – Rejected (Unreleased)

- New track of my up coming Dusty House Room 2 EP.  It’s very disco, but it rocks every crowd I play it to.
It has a sample that goes One, Two, Three.. So some might recognise it from my recent sets.

02.  Dosem – Beach Kisses (Joris Voorn Green Mix) – Green (Unreleased)

- The next EP on my own Green label, with my own remix of Dosem’s beautiful Beach Kisses track. It’s a bit edgy, in the sense that it sounds a little trancy, but with an open mind without predudice this is a great track!

03.  Edwin Oosterwal – Dusty House Room 3 – Rejected (Unreleased)

- Edwin’s secret tapes coming to live on the dancefloors… More about this soon!

04.  Deetron – Maindish – Music Man (Unreleased)

- Very strong new track from my good friend Deetron. This brings the soul back into techno!

05.  Steve Bug - Swallowed Too Much Bass (Joris Voorn Too Much Tape Delay Mix) – Poker Flat (Unreleased)

- Recent remix I did for Steve Bug, has a groovy basis, with a memorable break! Not much more than a nice tool, but very effective!

06.  Joris Voorn – Chase The Mouse – Rejected (Unreleased)

- The other track of my upcoming Dusty House EP. Summer tune….

07.  Samuel L Session – Can You Relate (Joris Voorn Flooding The Market With Remixes) – Soma Recordings

- Slightly ironic remix I did for SLS.

08.  Joris Voorn – Spank The Maid – Rejected (Unreleased)

- Spank it! Again, Dusty House music…

09.  Rejected – Peanut – Figure (Unreleased)

- A track Edwin and me have been working on 2 years ago, only got release just now, that’s how things go these days. Still works pretty well on the dancefloor though!

10.  Dj Madskillz – Tiramisu – Remote Area (Unreleased)

- Madskillz is mad, that’s all I can say..

How to Beatmatch with Ableton and a CDJ

If you’ve jumped on the bandwagon and got yourself a copy of Ableton Live, taught yourself the basics, figured out how to DJ with it and are now ready to perform in public, the only question you might be left asking is:
“How do I beatmatch Live to the DJ before me?”

EDIT: If you prefer to use Traktor Pro to DJ with then check here instead

The same problem surfaces (naturally) when you play back-to-back with someone when one of you want to use CDJ’s (or turntables) and the other on a laptop with Live.
Never fear, Live 7 (&8) are here!
There are two ways you can go about this, one requires no extra hardware, the other requires a midi device with at least one slider available eg. Faderfox LV2, Evolution UC-33 or the Vestax VMC-600.

1) Basic (no controller):

To successfully operate a steady tempo device (Live) in partnership with a variable tempo device (CDJ’s etc) without the use of a a hardware controller you will need to get one thing clear first…
Ableton assumes Master Tempo and all other devices are matched to its tempo.
Once you’ve started the global play on Live you will not need to stop it.  From here the CDJ user can will need to beatmatch each new track to Live’s signal.  When its time to mix a tune in from Live, you will need to make any tempo adjustments to the CDJ not ableton.
Ways to do this are:
  • a) Beatmatch to a guide track from Live (which will be always playing but never heard)
    • Create a new audio channel in your Live project
    • Route it to a secondary output channel (one not used for your performance)
    • Patch that channel into an unused channel on your mixing desk
    • Add a standard percussion loop to this channel and have it playing always
      • This will be your mixing guide track,  make sure it has a clear Kick, Snare and Hats… or whatever you really want to beatmatch to
    • Make sure the channels volume is never turned up on the mixing desk
    • Now you can monitor/make any tempo adjustments on the CDJ’s even when no track is playing on Live.  This will allow you to refer to Live’s tempo at regular itervals to make sure you are not drifitng out of time
  • b) Stop/Start Live as close to the beat as you can then have the CDJ’s adjusted (carefully, subtley)

2) Advanced (controller required):

To control Live’s tempo like a CDJ (or turntable) all you need to do is have a midi-assignable slider connected to the laptop and assign it to the global tempo.  Then, the trick is to set your Min/Max values to a range of say 5-10bpm MAX…
The smaller the range, the finer the control.  So if your set is starting at 127bpm and ending at 130bpm, then make the range like 125-132 to give some room to push pull.  Experiment here as you can get away with settings like 127-130  and you’ll get a real fine adjustment curve :)
It is also worth assigning the two Nudge buttons (“<<” & “>>”) as these will be handy to give little ‘bumps’ during the mix.  I use a combination of both slider & nudge with fairly precise accuracy.

So, to assign your midi slider:

- Turn ON Midi Map mode
  • Ctrl-M (PC) / Apple-M (Mac)
- Click on the global bpm (the whole number section not the decimal part)
- Move the slider you want to assign – you will see the assignment appear in the midi list on the right of screen
-> change the min & Max values now to suit. E.g Min = 125; Max = 130

If you wish to assign the Nudge buttons, do so now:

- Click on the Nudge Left button (this will slow down your tempo as long as you hold it)

The arrow at top like this “<<

- Tap the midi button you wish to assign
- Repeat for Nudge Right (speed up tempo whilst you hold it)

The arrow at top like this “>>

- Turn Off Midi Map mode
  • Ctrl-M again (or Apple-M for Mac)
Note:  I often assign nudge to midi & qwerty keyboard buttons for quick access no matter what I’m doing.
To assign to keyboard:

- Turn ON Keyboard Map mode (everything should go orange)
  • Ctrl-K (PC) / Apple-K (Mac)
- Click the nudge left
- Tap the key you wish to assign to  (I use the square brackets “[" and "]” )
- Repeat for the other nudge button
- Turn OFF Keyboard Map mode
VOILA!  You are now ready to boogie :)
